Audition for FAWK’s Hmong Super Show!
Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.s)
Q: What is The Hmong Super Show?
A: The Hmong Super Show is a live comedy show that will feature some performers doing stand-up comedy, some live-stage sketches, and some video sketches in front of an audience.
Q: What is the difference between the solo set auditions and the group auditions?
A: Solo sets involve one person performing comedy on a microphone. Folks auditioning for a solo set should come to the audition with three minutes of prepared material. The group auditions will help us cast people for sketches for our video and live shows. Think of these as mini-movies or mini-plays.
Q: When are auditions?
A: Solo auditions will happen on Thursday, January 16, 2025 between 6-9 PM. They will take place in person at FAWK’s office in downtown St. Paul. To sign up for a slot, go to this link.
Group auditions will happen on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 from 6:30-7:30 pm at Maplewood Library. Sign up for a slot.
Q: What will happen at the group auditions?
A: Think of the group auditions as a play date. They will include warm-up activities, getting-to-know-each-other activities, and games. We’ll mostly be playing games to see your comedic instincts, what roles might you thrive in, and how you work with others.
Q: Why is FAWK doing a “play date” instead of a traditional audition?
A: We recognize that auditions can be intimidating for people and think a play date might be an easier way to help you shine as a performer. We want to diversify the number of people who perform for FAWK but we also know that means we need to provide some more guidance and easier ways into comedy.
Q: If I get casted for The Hmong Super Show, will I be paid?
A: Yes.
Q: How can I prepare for group auditions?
A: Register ahead of time. Wear comfortable clothes. If you hear an inner critic saying, “Maybe you’re not funny enough to audition,” tell it to go away. Come ready to play. Come on time.
Q: How can I prepare for the solo auditions?
A: Solo sets are 3 minutes long and should represent what you’d want to perform at The FAWK Hmong Show in front of 700 people. You should practice your set–in front of friends or family or record the audio on your phone, so you can hear yourself. You should come with your set memorized.
Q: If I’d like to see examples of solo sets, what do you recommend?
A: Check out these comedians on Youtube:
Q: What kinds of people are you looking for?
A: People who are funny.
Q: Since this next FAWK Show is “The Hmong Show,” do participants have to be Hmong?
A: We are looking for performers who identify as women or non-binary AND who are either Hmong or telling stories that connect to the Hmong experience.
Q: Why is FAWK doing a Hmong-themed show?
A: Minnesota is home to one of the largest concentrations of Hmong in the U.S., and 2025 represents 50 years of Hmong folks in Minnesota.
